  We are given 2 equations.

  [1] "Craig is 24 years younger than his father"

  C + 24 = F

  [2] "In ten years, Craig's father will be three times as old as Craig will be"

  3(C+10) = F + 10

  So we need to substitute C + 24 for F in [2]:

  3(C+10) = (C+24) + 10

  3C + 30 = C + 34

  2C = 4

  C = 2

  So Craig is 2 and his father is 26.

  In 10 years, Craig will be 12 and his father will be 36.

  c = f - 24 given

  c+10 = (f+10) /3 given

  c = (f+10)/3 -10 subtract 10 from both sides

  f-24 = (f+10)/3 -10 because c = c

  f-14 = (f+10)/3 add 10 to both sides

  f3-42 = f+10 multiply both sides by 3

  f3 = f+52 add 42 to both sides

  f2 = 52 subtract f from both sides

  f = 26 divide both sides by 2

  if c = f - 24 then c = 2
