is Judo popular in MMA as much as BJJ?

BJJ makes up a good portion of MMA, but is Judo just as popular and trained? I heard classical, oldschool Judo is hardcore and many would actually fall back on Judo in a real fight if they had to use lethal force on someone. Im interested in Judo, do Judoka schools teach real classical Judo in its brute form? Sport has popularized MA's today, so all the dirty, nasty tricks aren't really around as much if Im not mistaken

  • You are correct. Classical judo can be very hardcore/brutal, but what you are taught depends on your sensei.

The popularity of an art/style depends in part on location of where somebody lives. Ever since UFC 1, BJJ has gained popularity in the U.S.A, and the other popular form of ground fighting in America is wrestling. Judo can be hard to find, but is definitely worth learning as a skill if you are interested in it, and you have access to a school/sensei in your area.

All of the techniques are still there, but the use of martial arts in true sports limits the use of any 'nasty tricks' in that application.

Judo is very effective in a real confrontation/fight, and it doesn't require "lethal force" to control an opponent.

  • What I've noticed in the UFC and other MMA bouts, judo is a lost art, you don't see many fighters using advanced judo just simple sweeps and hip tosses. Fighters like karo parisian uses judo to his advantage, but judo doesn't have grappling like BJJ and that's the only disadvantage in a pratical fight, in a cage fight you'll get points for throws but then you have to follow up with something else, submissions, ground and pound.

  • learn greco roman wrestling much better than judo but judo is a great art but greco roman is more likely 2 be functional in mma

  • Without Judo, you don't have a chance!

  • Judo is useless, honestly. it is.

  • No, it's not, at least no in the U.S.

    In Japan it is.
