Multivariate problem?

Ok. I think it's a multivariate problem.

Suppose I have two basketball players.

Player A. averages 19.11 pts per game with a standard dev. of 5.34

Player B averages 18.6 pts per game with a standard dev of 7.53

What's the chance that Player A outscores Player B in the upcoming game?

It's now hw. And you don't have to give me the answer. If you could provide me with the correct formula to use, that would be more than enough.

Thanks in advance.

  • HI,

    The lowest (L), average (A) and high (H) points will be:

    Lowest of player A => LA

    Player A:

    LA = 19.11 - 5.34 = 13.77

    AA = 19.11

    HA = 19.11 + 5.34 = 24.45

    Similarly for Player B

    LB = 18.6 - 7.53 = 11.07

    AB = 18.6

    HB = 18.6 + 7.53 = 26.13

    At lowest points A is scoring higher = LA - LB = 13.77 - 11.07 = 2.7

    At higher points B is scoring higher = HB - HA = 26.13 - 24.45 = 1.68

    chances of A scoring more points = 100*2.7/(2.7+1.68) = 270/4.38 = 61.6438%

    Hope to answer you well, keep smiling, bye.
