Atheists do you fear death?

My priest was telling us a story where an atheist ordered for him to bless him as he lay on his death bed. The dying man could not stop weeping through out the blessings, even his family( which are athiest) joined in and made the sign of the cross. Just before he passed away a terrified expression came upon his face followed by a faint smile. His last words were thank you.

When it's time to die, many atheists are understandably uneasy and those that aren't should be terrified.

  • I am an atheist and I don't especially fear death. Why do theists pretend they are better than atheists? Why do you make up stories to convert people? Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself. No atheist would ever ask for a religious nut for something like that. Just because a priest says something like that does not make it true.

  • I do not fear death. Death is inevitable. I do fear a long death bed for example though. I do not believe in a heaven or a hell, therefore it does not scare me. I feel sorry for the loved ones I will leave behind. Most atheists will answer you the same. Most theists however die in fear, not knowing if their god will reward or punish them for the life they have lived.

  • No, I believe that people who believe in Heaven are the ones who fear death. They are afraid of the darkness of death, so they have created an imaginary land where they can live forever.

  • If I were to die now, I would be afraid that I won't be able to enjoy my life anymore. There are still plenty of things I want to do and I just don't want to die.

If I die of old age, right now I don't think I'd be afraid, because I'll make sure I live life to the fullest before that happens.

    Everyone dies eventually.

  • For every story of someone supposedly seeing hell or heaven right when they're about to die, there's a ton of other stories where people experience nothing at all.

If you base your beliefs on the God of the Bible but then find out the Bible is full of inconsistencies and contradictions, then you're back to square one: no proof of Bible God.

  • If a person is so ill that there body is about to die it's a fair assumption that their mind might not function as well as normal either,e.g lack of oxygen, pain, adrenaline etc,so death bed events are not valid, ask your priest why he was there because when I die there will be no priest or rabbi or other"holy"man with me.Let me guess the man who died was a Muslim?that's why he made the sign of the cross?no he was at least exposed to Catholic imagery at some point in his life.

  • No, I will not fear you're god. Because if someone that old exists, it's going to take a while before it gets to me.

  • Hehe, like Darwin, right? To answer you're question, no. I'm afraid of eternity, but not death.

  • i'm not frightened of loss of life! Why could I be? I honestly have lived a solid existence, and have been the final man or woman i might desire to be! the certainty that i don't think in any afterlife does not influence the way i think approximately loss of existence! I honestly have Emphysema, and the top of my existence is nice around the corner, and the closer it gets, i'm getting greater comfortable and calm approximately it! have faith me, the assumption of oblivion is so plenty greater comforting, than being in need of breath each and every time I flow my physique! i'm tired of not being waiting to do each and every of the failings I used to do! strolling,or perhaps doing abode initiatives! i might desire to be waiting to do those issues back, so loss of life is transforming into greater, and greater welcome! it relatively is the excellent relax, and one i anticipate without concern, or be apologetic approximately!!

  • Yes. I cannot stand the idea of permanent loss of consciousness. I literally will not sense, feel or exist any longer. It's a completely horrible idea, the worst part of life.
