Free Car Rides to Siblings?

I am in college, and under 21. Every break, when my 2 sisters and I come home from different colleges, they always want to go out and drink. No biggie.

I will have no problem picking them up when they are drunk, but when they are getting a cab home, would you expect your little brother to drive you to the bars ten miles away?

So they asked me and I said "For $20." My idea is I'm going to have nothing to do this Thanksgiving weekend while they go out partying. Is there some familial obligation to drive siblings places?

  • There are two ways to look at this in my book, but neither of them focus on your feeling left out. On one hand, by driving them to and from bars, you're encouraging them to overindulge. But, on the other hand, if you didn't do it, there's a possibility they might drive themselves while drunk, or hitch a ride with a drunk friend.

If you think that there's much of a chance that they will do something dangerous if you don't give them a ride, I say to set aside your personal feelings and do it. If you're sure they'll get a cab, tell them you're busy and let them put out the money. Maybe they'll have to quit drinking earlier so they'll have enough for cab fare.

  • you may die you drink a lot of hard drinks.
