  • You can use the ^ symbol to represent "to the power of":

    5^3 x 5 x 5^4

When you multiply numbers with the same base, you can *add* the exponents.

    3 + 1 + 4 = 8

(Remember that 5 is the same as 5^1)

    So this is equivalent to:

    5^8

  • a^n * a^m = a^(n+m)

    5^3 * 5 * 5^4 = 5^(3+1+4) = 5^8

    (5 = 5^1)

  • 5 to the power of 3 = 5 * 5 * 5

    5 to the power of 4 = 5 * 5 * 5 * 5

    so, 5 to the power of 3 * 5 * 5 to the power of 4 is:

    (5 * 5 * 5) * 5 * (5 * 5 * 5 * 5)

or, 5 to the power of 8

  • 5 to the power of 8

    basically

    5^3(5)(5^4) is saying:

    5(5)(5)(5)(5)(5)(5)(5)

    which equals

    5^8

you can also go by how they teach it in the book. when you add the same bases with different exponents, you add the exponents

    x^a (x^b)= x^(a+b)

  • is this what you ask: (5^3)*5*(5^4)

(in math it is very critical to ba able to express yourself very clearly)

    If this is so then (5^3)*5*(5^4) = (5^3)*(5^1)*(5^4) =

    5^(3+1+4) = 5^8
