  • Increased RAM can make things faster. You can see if your computer can handle more RAM by going to Crucial.com and running a scan. No need to buy from them.

It's important to note that everything takes RAM. Not only security products (such as active anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall) eat up memory but your operating system, active browser windows, running applications (such as Word, Gaming, Messenger, Photoshop, etc), graphic card and malware all compete for system resources. The presence of Malware (viruses, spyware, etc) will particularly eat up your system resources so you may want to run your resident security products such as antispyware and antivirus applications to ensure that your system is clean.

  • Ram doesn't really make your computer faster. Well it can however the performance results are usually small and most of the time not noticable unless your laptop has such little memory where it is starving.

If you want to make it faster, you first need to determine what you are needing to be faster.

If you are just talking about programing loading and boot time than memory and processor speed would be your best buy however since it is not feasible to upgrade a processor in a laptop you can try the memory. A good website for pricing is www.newegg.com or www.pricewatch.com. Just look for what ram is compatiable, you can upgrade ram from anywhere from $30 - $300 - I would stick under the $100 range for the first upgrade if I were you.

If you want the Laptop faster for graphics processing such as video encoding, editing or high end graphic games than the processor and memory also as a big impact but your GPU ( video card processor) has a lot to do with this as well. This is something eles you can not easily upgrade on a laptop but it can be done. If you go this far I suggest contacting a local Computer upgrade shop for more info.

If you want everything to dramatically change then you are going about it the wrong way. Do not upgrade idividual components, save your money and upgrade to a new laptop.

    I hope this helps.

  • You must be doing some crazy multitasking because thats a pretty good rig.

The maximum RAM you should need is 1.5gb, I have 2gb and I have never been able to get it past the 1.5gb mark even while running downloads, virus scans, and games at the same time.

The thing that would make the biggest difference would be shutting down all the programs you dont use, I know dells have all sorts of extra crap they put on there that is useless. I couldnt believe all the stuff they put on my friends laptop he got a few weeks ago.

  • RAM is only one factor in how fast a computer works. Depending on lots of things, more RAM might speed you up a lot or not enough to notice. The speed of the processor is very important also.

RAM is cheap these days so it won't cost too much to try. You need to know what kind of RAM. It should be in your manual, failing that you can look it up on Dell's website or call their customer service number. Then go to http://pricewatch.com/ and see who sells it the cheapest and how much it is.

(BTW, I also highly recommend NewEgg.com. I've bought lots of stuff from them before.)

  • Jeffrey, simply go to Crucial.com, and use their Crucial System Scanner. It just checks your installed memory, and the motherboard. It'll tell how much you can install, what kind, how much you have on your computer at present, etc. You don't have to buy from them, but I recommend them, or Tigerdirect.com, and Newegg.com

  • instead of buying ram you can shutdown unnecessary services that your computer is running and make computer faster that is what I did to mine, there are tons of services that are unless for a home computer but they run by default try that :)
