As a muslim, can i keep a dog as a pet?

I know this question has been asked before.

I know that muslims say that dogs are impure, but how come are we allowed to eat what a hunting dog catches. And is it a specific breed of dog that is the hunting dog which we can keep or any dog can be taught to hunt? In the first case can I adopt that breed of dog and keep it inside? In the second case can i adopt a dog, teach him to hunt once, then keep him indoors?

    From what I've read, no you can't keep a dog as a pet. Only for herding, hunting and guarding.

    The dog's PURPOSE would be to hunt, so if you keep a dog but don't use it to hunt, then it's not a legit hunting dog, is it?

    Of course not. You're obviously looking for a way to get around the rules of your religion.

    If you live in your own home (no one else living with you), you can decide for yourself if it is more important for you to have a pet dog in your home or to abide by your religion.

    I suggest you ask your religious leader (Imam) for clarification.

    One of my friends when I was younger was Muslim, and she could not even sleep over at my home because we had dogs that came indoors. They had a cat, but that was allowed as they do not see cats as 'dirty' like dogs. We did sleep overs at other friends homes that did not own dogs but did have cats. It was not allowed for them to sleep were dogs sleep, I believe that it would have been okay if the dogs were strictly out door dogs that never came inside.

    However I am far from sure, this is what I was told as a young girl; I would strongly recomend talking to one of your religions officiates about this to get a better understanding of what is and is not allowed as well as the why behind it.

    I'm no expert but from what I've heard and read a dog is never allowed in the house under ANY circumstances. If you live alone then and you can get a dog you'll need to discuss this with some type of religious official if it matters to you.

    I don't know but what I do know is I'm sure you want to stick to your religion as much as possible but I can't understand why it would be bad to adopt a dog. You are giving a dog a second chance. Surely Allah wouldn't mind that. If you are deeply unsure I would recommend asking someone who knows a lot in the religion maybe the imam?

    The Qur'an basically states that keeping a dog in the house is not healthy; it does not expressly forbid it unless interpreted in it's most literal sense.

    Post this in Society and Culture and see if anyone there knows, and ask at your school or mosque.
