How do you appeal to conservatives?
I am giving a speech soon and the judges are elderly conservative men. How to appeal on the topic of cyber communication (my view is that it is a problem)? Is mentioning sexting taboo? Thanks!

Jen, I think that you believe they will not listen and judge you fairly because they are conservative elderly men. From that standpoint you can't appeal to them because you have put your own personal road blocks in the way already. What you need to do is first determine your position on the topic. You believe cyber communications (which is what yahoo answers is, but I guess you are not including that) as a problem. Mentioning sex-ting is not taboo, but using it or whatever other things, like porn, as a basis for thinking cyber comm is a problem is deeply flawed. I would ask about using the cyber communications for things like order things on-line, DMV or poison control based would be considered bad too because they are provided using the offending communications medium.
Stop focusing on their conservativeness, and make your case. Understand that you might not make a strong enough case to make them think differently and if you fail is that it is not their fault, or give you some aha moment to say that they were biased in the first place. That point of view is just to help you feel better about yourself and doesn't really explain why your words did not move them into a different direction.
Stop worrying about them and make the strongest case you can to support your position.
First sexting- this may or may not be tabu depending on the subject matter for example if your topic is cyber Communications and teenagers- it would be quite appropriate to mention sexting - describe what it is and what should be done when under-aged people are caught sexting.
Should they face criminal charges? If your topic is about general privacy issues- it would be up to you to decide. Just remember whether or not you agree with the topic to give a rational argument.
If you give a speach on a topic you disagree with and can defend it well- you will be able to defend a topic you support even better.
Conservatives tend to be realists, so don't try to convince them that Obama is an honest politician, or that he cares about anyone other than himself and you will be on your way to acceptance.
Secondly: Don't take any of the advice offered by the majority of the Liberals out here, as they are mostly ill informed halfwits at best.
I'd leave sexting out of it, you don't want them to get too excited. Instead you should talk about cyber communications in terrorism, that will get them all worked up.
well , presenting your view in a responsible way is best. stick to the facts. and avoid "graphic" descriptions.
Cyber com...is just that...pretty straight forward.."sexting" is own it's own category, and using the term can be appropriate IF you use it IN context, and keep it to a simple point..
even grown men know that there are lots of words..
that when used in context carry weight, and explain far more than metaphors.

and sexting is simply erotic adult cyberchat....called.."sexting"
