Does mesothelioma cause a particular type of cancer?

My husband when young installed telephone wires in buildings that were being built and ended up with cancer of the lung that was in the upper part of his lung when he was in his 50's. I am curious about whether this type of cancer caused by mesothelioma affects a particular part of the lung and if the type of cancer caused by mesothelioma is a particular type or does it cause many different types of cancer of the lung.

  • Benign mesothelioma is a noncancerous tumor of the lining of the lung and chest cavity, an area called the pleura. It is also called solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura.

    The outcome is expected to be good with prompt treatment. The condition may return in about 1 out of 10 cases. It may reoccur as long as 10 years later.

    Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon cancerous tumor of the lining of the lung and chest cavity (pleura) or lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) that is typically due to long-term asbestos exposure.

    The average survival time varies from 4 - 18 months. However, your outlook depends on:--

    * The stage of the tumor

    * Your age and general health

    * Whether surgery is an option

    * Your response to treatment

  • There are Four main types of mesothelioma, each type indicates the area of the body where the cancer originates.

    Pleural mesothelioma is the most common type of mesothelioma, representing about 75% of cases.

    Peritoneal mesothelioma is the second most common type, consisting of about 10% to 20% of cases.

    Approximately 1% of cases are of the Pericardial Mesothelioma.

    Another rare type known as Testicular mesothelioma represents less than 1 percent of cases.
