Upgrade CPU or video card?

I want to edit HD video with Sony Vegas but it's so choppy that I can't really do any edition. So I was thinking in upgrading my video card, but I am being told it has almost no effect in the edition part of it. So I am thinking of upgrading the cpu instead.

So what should I look for in a new cpu?

My actual system:

- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 GHz (939 socket)

- Asus Motherboard (can't remember model, I think A8N)

- 3.5 GB RAM

- Win 7 64bit

- Video: ATI Radeon X300/550/1050 series 128MB

  • For an editting machine you should go for a Phenom x4 at least (x6 is probably better)

The new AM3+ (fx series) will more than likely be incompatible with your board, so dont look at them unless you want to upgrade your motherboard too.

Have a look on Asus's website for your motherboard and look under the CPU Supported list. You'd be looking for x4 or x6 chips....That should help quite a bit...

But you might be looking at getting a new Mobo / CPU combo.

Graphics Card will likely only help if you are a gamer as well

  • Really depends on what you like to do. If you like playing games the card is the way to go. You have to remember that most software today doesn't always utilize those multiple cores. There is still quiet a bit of older software out today that would do better with a single core 3 GHz CPU then a dual core 2 GHz one. On another note, the prices for the graphics cards aren't going to go down as fast as the cpu prices. Go with the Card.

  • Upgrading to quad cores for video editing is a big plus! It will decrease the time for rendering. Video card doesn't help much in video editing. Can ur computer play 1080p or 720p? If so, then ur video card is fine. If it doesn't get a cheap but can play 1080p or 720p video card (cost 60-80$ on newegg.com)

  • You need three items. A new motherboard that can fit the new processor, at least an i5 (or equivalent amd) and a 580 or 590 (or equivalent radeon card) or two 560's ram in sli

  • I'm surprised that Win 7 64 bit even loaded on to that old junker, it probably took more than 2 hours to install.

Basically, you need a gaming PC to do movie making/editing/etc.

  • for HD video editing you need to Buy a new computer im afraid.

i recommend a intel core i5/i7 and a High end video card, like Nvidia GTX 470 or so

or the fast ones from ATI

  • You should upgrade to a new puter [no trying to be wise.] A new cpu or video card probably wouldn't help much. You could find a good one on craigslist or ebay.

  • the fact that thats what you're using for video editing makes me want to kill myself

  • All of the above
