No. There is a long list of possible side affects and mood disorders aren't one of them. All you have to do is search "what are Benadryl side affects" and there you have it. If someone is experiencing rage and anger and neglects the family it sure doesn't have a thing to do with an allergy medication.
Absolutely! When the drug was wearing off, I would get very angry over nothing. I will point out that I had endless problems with psychiatric medications, with uncontrollable anger being one of them. I know the benadryl was one culprit, because during a period I was off the drugs a long time, I took it for poison ivy, and sure enough, I behaved horribly! I've been off all drugs for more than 3 years now, and the rages are altogether gone for 3 years. So it's absolutely true that some people get this problem, because I did. So did my brother. Who cares it's not listed as a side effect - that just means nobody reported it, and that's very common for people not to report hard to figure out side effects like that. If I have to take it for poison ivy again, I will be sure to warn family members, and it helps to know that I may explode over nothing, so I put signs around reminding me to count to 10 etc, stuff I don't normally need.
As for neglect, I didn't have that problem. Depression can do that, or perhaps you are excessively sedated.
ANY drug that passes the blood brain barrier can cause psychiatric side effects. Who cares it's an antihistamine - it causes drowsiness, therefore it is passing into your brain doing who knows what? (Answer: nobody knows).
I emphasize that it was when the drug was wearing off that I had the anger problems. And it lasted maybe a day or two (I didn't take notes). I suggest you avoid the stuff unless it's something like poison ivy or several bee stings etc.
things that normally cause people to have jitters will calm her (for example stimulants)
things that normally cause people to get drowsy can make her jittery & irritable (for example benadryl)
I witnessed this when she got into some poison oak & took benedryl
she became very agitated, irritable, and angry
---- However, her reaction to benadryl is not common & I would question benedryl's role in someone neglecting their family --- is there some reason this person has to take benedryl on-going? or is benedryl something they put aside to see if it is the problem?
The biggest side effect is sleep. Before I took it at home, they wiped my back to give me a needle. I fell asleep. Good thing hubby drove me home because I couldn't stay awake. I was asleep 17 hours and fought the other 6 hours, before going back to sleep.
But it does give mood difference. Not the one you mentioned, but it is mood switch.
