refuse a scholarship?

Let's say I lied to get a scholarship and I got it. Can I refuse the scholarship so I won't be in risk to get in trouble?

  • If you obtained the scholarship under false pretenses, that is, you lied or committed a fraudulent act to get it, then by all means return the funds if they've already been committed. Most scholarships are sent directly to the school you're accepted to, and the school can return the money.

If this is not the case with you, contact the scholarship awarding authority immediately (telephone, email or in-person), make them aware of the situation, say you're sorry and move on with your life.

    You'll sleep better, believe me.

  • possibly, but whatever the answer is, yes or no, it will depend on the scholarship, but i don't see why you wouldn't be able to although if you refuse it they may wonder why and you could still possibly get in trouble. my advice is in the future don't lie on a scholarship app, now if it was an accident and you didn't mean to 'lie', say you put your weighted gpa but they wanted unweighted and you didn't realize you may be able to let them know without any trouble, although then i wouldn't call that a lie then but you get the point
