Car Key Problem?

So yesterday I lost my key for my 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. I was able to find a copy of the original key. However that copy key only allows me to unlock the doors & trunk but not turn on the car (I can't turn the key in the ignition). The original key was able to turn on the car & unlock the doors. What is the issue with the copy key? Can a locksmith help me? What should I do? Please note that my keys are regular normal keys, they're not a chip & do not have a remote control built on them. The remote control comes aside.

  • Take your title to the dealer parts department and they can cut you a new set of keys using the VIN. You need the title to prove you are the owner of the vehicle and it has the VIN on it.

  • Keys wear and don't work. Copy keys copy worn keys (so don't work). You may have to get a new ignition key cylinder (with it's own key).

  • If the lost key opened the doors, the spare key was probably just cut sloppy. Ask a dealer. They might be able to make you a key from the VIN. A good locksmith can answer your question a lot better that Yahoo.

Ignore the pretend expert who says it's a transponder key. They didn't use them on your model as you already know.

  • The key to turn the ignition has a chip in it. You will have to go to a dealer. It happened to me while on vacation. After losing my keys, my spare key would only unlock the doors. The dealership charged us a $150. But, a friend of mine said we could get one on Ebay cheaper. I didn't understand how that would work for my car, but if you have time, maybe you can check that out! Good luck!

  • Sad story, bro. Now you have to buy a new car.
