Do i need a new catalytic converter?

So I took my car in for a smog retest after I had failed miserably last month. It was high on everything under the 15mph test and failed evap but passed the 25mph test. Odd I know.

So I replaced everything I could think of:

Air filter

plugs and wires

cap and rotar

oil and filter

I even drove the car around like crazy before my test to warm up the cat.

So I came to realize that I had forgotten to replace the 02 sensor like I had on my test two years ago (40,000 miles). Could this be my issue? or could it be my cat converter? Or worse?

Here are the numbers:

15mph

HC: max 104, meas 247

CO: max 0.45, meas .60

NO: max 527, meas 1244

25mph

HC: max 58, meas 58

CO: max 0.46, meas 0.36

NO: max 592, meas 305

At this point I really do not know what to do.

THANKS!!

  • It looks like your running a rich mixture at the 15 MPH test which it very well could be the O2 sensor. It could also be the cat convert not doing its job too. Take a look at the engine temp to be sure it is running at 190 degrees. You may need a scanner to find out if the O2 is working and that will also tell is the temp gauge is right.

  • Get your exhaust system checked, there may be a leak that is throwing off the ECM.
