Is the Euthyphro Dilemma a false dilemma?

Euthyohro Dilemma:

-Is what is moral commanded by God because it is moral

or

-Is it moral because it is commanded by God

Let's say

M = An action is moral

C = An action is commanded by God

So the logical layout for this is:

C --> M

or

M --> C

But the ignored possibility is:

C <--> M

Update:

@h:

Thanks for answering, but no, for C <--> M it is:

T/T: T

T/F: F

F/T: F

F/F: T

  • well to answer you must define the variables God and morals. If we are assuming that the God you speak of is the Christian God then his commandments are based on love. Morals are a response of loving on another. God does not command us to have morals, he does not even say that you must follow the ten commandments (they are a mirror by which one may examine their walk). Jesus says that to go to heaven you must love God and believe that Jesus died for your sins, this is all you have to do to be a christian. Now morals are spawned because God says if you want to show your love do these things, and he calls them fruits.

    Morals are defined as an ethical motive, actions based on right and wrong. Since God defines right and wrong both statements are true.

    Interesting dilemma but scripture is made to answer these.

  • if truth be told there is not any difference between your "0.33 decision" and the 2d, and realistically little difference between it and the 1st. in many ethical structures there are rational motives for why strikes and intentions are good or undesirable, yet as quickly as we glance on the ethical structures proposed with the help of perception, we see that they are arbitrary and not what we would assume of the two a god that loves "good" or that defines "good".

  • isn't that a tautology?
