Do you think i'm a mess mentally?

I just realized, I think I have more problems than I thought. I thought I was just suffering from ADD but I think it's more than that. I'm a 16 yr/o f. but I just need some advice I guess. I'm going to the doctors soon because I finally want to get prescribed ADD medication, but I think I have a touch of paranoia, anxiety, and depression.

Heres a normal for me:

I go to school, anxious for no reason. Atleast once a day at school I overhear someone say something im almost positive is about me and I feel like crap ( though i'm pretty sure they are talking about me..), then I get home from school and sleep because I feel like absolute crap,

then my parents tell me im irresponsible and lazy and I better get my grades up.. though they have a problem with me talking ADD medications and that it wont 'solve' my problems.

The thing is, my parents dont want me on ADD medication but when I tried it before ( from my brothers ) all my symptoms went away

I'm too embarrassed to go to the doctors when they 'interview' you about your emotions and whatnot, to say that I feel like crap every day and I have anxiety problems.

so, my question is what do you think my main problem is? I know its something because i'm never happy anymore, i used to have a really good outlook on life and now its just gone.

if you made it thew this S.A. thank you :)

well, any answers are appreciated.

  • Dear Jamie,

Don't worry about the situation you are having, it happens to every teen at some point in there life. It is completely normal and you don't have a problem.

It's just that you are worried about something deep down in side you. Maybe (example A) you were/are slightly overweight. This can cause you to feel concerned about your body image and lead you to think that people are always talking about you because you 'stand out'. But it's great to be different. No matter if your overweight or not, this is can easily be cured using 2 things.

    1) Don't think about what others say (that's negative).

If these problems reside in your school, just think of how when such an intelligent person like yourself goes to college (I know you're smart just on reading how you express your emotions :)) you won't have to deal with them anymore. And your parents on the other hand might ask you to pick up your grades because maybe they know you can do better. I have full faith that they love and care for you so much, they just want the best for you.

    2) A warm drink always cheers me up, whether it be Butter Beer, Hot Coco, Hot Cider, Hot Tea, (no coffee, as coffee can lead to more stimulation and lead to you having a bigger crash after wards), etc. And don't be embarrassed to talk to your Doctor, he/she can always help! Try this, when you come back from school, list all the great things that happened (example: learned a new concept, had a great lunch, a speaker came in, sports was fun, etc). Then see how fortunate you are to be getting education (that's another positive note of the day)! The mind will overpower drugs and medication. Was there any main turning point in your life pre-16? Did a grandparent die? A pet? Maybe someone you loved?

To cure: Enter into a quiet room with plenty of natural lighting and fresh air/ go outside. Sit down crossed legged. Close your eyes. First think about when you suddenly changed. Try and remember yourself before that point, even if that means you must remember your earlier ages. Now focus on how happy you were. As you are thinking about this, steadily and continuously breathe in from your nose, and out your mouth. Now try and remember what changed you. Breathe in through the nose. Out through the mouth. Calm yourself. Do this eyes closed and when you are at your freshest and calmest (mornings). Now let everything go. Now keeping your eyes closed, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. In your mind, imagine the number of breaths and continuously think about it. For example, first breath: Thinking about number 1 with eyes closed, breath in slowly, out slowly. Second... focusing on the number 2 while inhaling in through nose and exhaling out through mouth. Do this until 10, then repeat until you feel calm again.

Try it, it really works! Hope this helped! Don't worry, you will get through these tough times, stay in there Jamie! I just know you can do it!

  • You're not a mess. I promise you that LOT'S of people are more of a mess than you are, and you're doctor has seen at least a few of those ones. You will not be looked down on for asking for help. It is, after all, your doctors job to help you, or at least refer you to somebody who can be of more help.

Anxiety sounds like a major problem for you. Anxiety itself can cause distractability and issues with school/grades. It is also possible to have anxiety and ADHD separately. Stimulants prescribed for ADHD can increase anxiety for some people, so you really need to be evaluated by a physician/psychologist/psychiatrist before you decide what exactly is the best option for you.

Also, most medications for anxiety can have other side effects--they can be very addicting and can cause tiredness. The most common class of medication used for anti-anxiety purposes is the benzodiazepines. You can look some of them up if you want. You have probably heard of some of them: Ativan, Klonopin, etc. Side effects can be annoying and make me very reluctant to take my own anxiolytic medication.

Another way to deal with anxiety issues is to go to therapy. Therapy will have no side effects and can improve your ability to deal with all sorts of things that cause you anxiety (getting to the roots and not treating just symptoms).

Consider all of your options and especially the repercussions of taking extra medications.

  • You are hyper sensitive.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about when you go to a Dr. They have heard it all and believe me, they have heard much more embarrassing stories than yours. If you want help, you have to be honest and open.
