Is a Miniature Australian shepherd...?

Is a Mini Aussie, a Aussie mix? Someone tried to tell me that there's 3 types of Australian Shepherds: Standard, Mini, and a Toy...

Update:

Well I know about the breed, I have a Pure Bred Aussie.

  • no such thing

its just an ill bred mutt. All so called 'mini Aussies' are mixes.

  • The Australian shepherd people didn't like the idea of a breed called the miniature Australian shepherd, so the breeders of the minis changed the name to miniature American shepherd. It has the same personality and hyperactivity level as the Australian shepherd. It is very smart, easy to train but requires a GREAT DEAL of daily exercise and mental stimulation.

  • There is no Toy Australian Shepherd, at least not any such recognized breed.

However, a breed that looks like a miniature Australian Shepherd is now part of the AKC Miscellaneous Class:

So it would appear that the Mini Aussie is indeed a breed that is on the road to full AKC recognition, but under a different name; the Miniature American Shepherd.

  • There's no toy Australian shepherd. There is a mini which is a purebred dog. Not a mix. The mini is its own breed. Just like how a min pin is its own breed and not even related to the doberman pinscher in any way shape or form even though they look alike.

  • Aussies only come in one size- standard. The "mini Aussie" are dogs cross bred and down bred for smaller size from genetics that most legitimate Aussie breeders would NOT intentionaly cross.

  • Most likely an Aussie mixed with a Sheltie or Pomeranian (I saw a ``mini Aussie`` and it looked like an Aussie Pom mix).

  • No such thing as a toy Australian Shepherd. It's either a chihuahua mix or a papillion mix.

Please visit the Australian Shepherd Club of America http://www.asca.org/ for true and correct info on the breed.

  • Just the same as there are 3 types of idiots, Standard, Mini and toys.
