Do you like unique names, or would you consider a family name?
What is your opinion on how special a persons name is? Do you like unique names or ones that fit the child? Or would you use a family name, and why? Do you feel names hold a certain power over our lives? Just interested in what you have to say about the topic.
Btw my name is Rachael, and I feel like the name suits me

I think that even the person with the most average name can do great things, but I do think that the most unique names tend to give one an advantage on life. I love unigue names, because they sound so much prettier usually. If a name has a really special meaning to you, then use it, but cooler names tend to make someone more popular growing up.
I believe names are important, I have a daughter named Julie and I fell in love with her name when I watched the movie Look who's talking. At the end of the movie the little boy says hi to his new born sister Julie, he said her name so adorable that I fell in love with that name. I tell her the story of how I got her name and she loves it. Also we are a Latino family and Julie wouldn't be a name chosen in most tradition families. I can say her name stands out and is unique. My name is Rita and I find my name unique as well just because when I was growing up as a child through out my school years there was never another Rita ) so that made me happy. I am pregnant now, and hope its a boy I have chosen strong brave names for him. It was easier for me to choose boys names then girls names I don't know why? I find out what I'm having next week, but most definitely I would chose an unique name that I like than a family name. Unless its a family member that i admire.
I do prefer names to be unusual, although it's not hugely important to me - for example, my two favourite girl names are Lily and Lila, and whilst Lily is #4 in UK, Lila has never even made it into the top 100!
When I have children I plan on using middle names to honour family members, and first names will just be names that my partner and I love. I adore traditions but think it's important for a child to have their own name and their own identity.
Do I feel names hold a certain power over our lives? Not really, but I do have connotations about certain names - e.g. I imagine a girl called Lily to be kind and intelligent, whilst I imagine a girl called Lila to be fun and outgoing - and I think people pick up on the connotations that others hold about their name, and depending on their personality, unconsciously shape themselves to fit that mould. When I was little I used to go by Eleanor, and I was quiet and clever. Then I started going by Ellie when I was 10 or 11 and I really came out of myself - I became friendly and vivacious and fun-loving. Some people would argue that the change in name directly lead to a change in my personality, whilst others would argue that it was the surge in confidence I felt by changing my name that lead to a change in my personality. I guess we'll never truly know, but it's an interesting topic to speculate about!
Awesome question!! xx
Giving your children misspelled or outright made up names for the sake of "uniqueness" should be considered child abuse. Your child is a human being, not a status symbol or a billboard for your perceived creativity. Anyone that claims any reason other than pure selfishness for giving their child a terrible name is lying to themselves and everyone around them. A Sarah or a Thomas can be just as super-special-awesome as an Evahleigh or a Jaaden, without having to spell their name for everyone they meet.
I named my son Parker James and that is a VERY strong family name. Every male in my family has had james as his first or middle name and Parker was my great grandpas name. But since my dad only had daughters i though i would carry on the family tradition and i love the name so it worked out well.
I like unique and old fashion names like Stella Mae and Charlotte Grace.Mae is my Grandmother's middle name and I think Stella is just too cute period.Yes names do hold a certain power over our lives
I think it depends on the name and the person. I like a little history to a name. My name was from a song that my mom loved (Amanda) my sisters name was from a movie that I loved as a little kid and I was able to sell my parents on it. lol. Our middle names are family names. My after two aunts, my sister has the same middle name as my mom and grandma. I think it's nice to have some family tradition mixed in there somewhere. But our names don't define us. They just add a little flavor.
Well my wife and i are going to name our baby boy Connor James. James is after my best friend who recently passed away. It isn't the most unique name but it has so much meaning behind it. It isn't really a family name but my friend was like family so we want to honor him. Hope i could help.
