MATH WORD PROBLEM / MATH WORD PROBLEM?

The time a person takes to paddle a keyak 2miles downstream is the same as the time to paddle half a mile upstream. If the rate of the current is 3mph, what is the persons paddling rate in still water?

any info would be great, thanks

  • Paddling rate—r:

    2/(r + 3) = (1/2)/(r - 3)

    2r - 6 = 1/2r + 3/2

    4r - 12 = r + 3

    3r = 15

    r = 5

    Answer: 5 mph is the paddling rate of a person.

    Proof:

    2mi/(5 + 3 mph) = (1/2mi)/(5 - 3 mph)

    2mi/8mph = (1/2mi)/2mph

    1/4 hr = 1/4 hr

  • (Vsw+3)t=2 ,

    (Vsw-3)t=0.5 ,Divide both sides together,

    Vsw+3/Vsw-3=4

    Vsw+3=4Vsw-12,15=3Vsw,=====> Vsw=paddling rate in still water=

    =15/3=5mph

    God bless you.
