The AMD Athlon II 635 is a average, consumer-grade processor.
If you are a gamer and want an upgrade, the best option that is future proof for a couple of years (assuming that you want to stick with AMD) is the AMD Phenom II X4 965.
The Phenom is worlds faster and higher quality than your current Athlon, the phenom cost around $99 and is a popular CPU for gamers. It is usually more than powerful enough to cover gamers needs.
I suggest this as your motherboard has a AM3 socket, upgrading to other CPU's/APU's will require you to get a new motherboard (due to AMD's habit of always changing socket types).
However the best option is to go for an intel. they are more expensive, but there is a good reason for it, intel processors demolish AMD processors and are WAY more reliable. Of course with an intel CPU you personally would have to get a new motherboard (totally worth the money if you are able to).
Your processor is pretty old now.
Its certainly time to upgrade now.
Your processor AMD Athlon II X4 635 is in comparison falls far behind the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 Ghz processor.
Please check the benchmark details below and get a clear picture how it falls behind in each multimedia tests.
With falling prices around x-mas you should definitely buy an intel core i5-2500K or the 3rd gen core i5-3550k, at slightly higher than $200 . Well these are best for gaming.
If you have quite a big budget then go for the Core i7-3770k 3.4 Ghz monster.
It's pretty low end quad core. It's only about as fast a higher end Core 2 Duo dual core when it comes to gaming. It uses an AM3 socket, so you could probably go up to a Phenom II X4 9xx Black something like that.
Your CPU will bottleneck some high end GPUs. If you buy a top-end GPU like the 680 or 79xx, you will need a 2nd/3rd gen Intel cpu to prevent a severe bottleneck.
Best CPUs right now with both the highest performance and best price:performance ratio is Intel 2nd/3rd gen i series.
cpubenchmark.net's Price:performance ratio is a bit skewed because it doesn't take into account how horrible the FX cpus are in single, dual, and quad threaded applications vs Intel.
AMD Athlon II X4 635 if that's the one you have then it's good. 2.9 GHz well not beast but good, really good. Most games don't require that high processor speed, but good graphic card and Ram.
You have one of those AND processors. those were great back in 2007.
I would rate it about low-mid range. maybe play games at this same level
