My local karate system ranking?

My local karate place, which I've just had my first lesson at yesterday and loved, has a system in place where RED is the rank up from white. When I look on the internet though, RED is just before BLACK. So, that's why I'm a bit confused haha!

  • There are about 50 different styles of Karate. most do not even have red as one of their color belts. If I'm not mistaken Korean arts used the red belt before some Karate styles began to add it to their rank system. bottom line here is any instructor or style/organization can set any color belts any way they want to. There is no universal standard. The only thing that is common is there are a number of color belts between white belt and black belt. Then there are levels of black belt. Some styles have as few as 5 degrees of black belt. Others have more. There are some karate styles that have as many as 10 degrees of black belt. In general systems that have more than five degrees view ranks above fifth degree black belt as Honorary ranks. But all style have one thing in common. A student reaching first degree black belt has learned, But not mastered the basics. He may not even be good at fighting. He has only learned the basics and has shown that he might have what it takes to learn the style.

  • Karate dojos sometimes have different ranking systems. My Karate dojo belt ranking system goes white, orange, red, green, blue, purple, brown and then black.

  • Karate is from okinawa and migrated to japan

There is NO such thing as korean or chinese karate they each have there own systems

There is no standard for belt color number or order, I have seen as few as 6 and as many as 24 belts before black.

As long as you have about less then 10 before black then its not a rip off

  • every dojo will have it's ow system of ranking- and use different colours to represent this. There is no standard system in place. Most dojos will have 9 (or 10 if you include white) KYU grades to pass through before you can grade for 1st DAN (1st black belt)

  • There are different types of karate teachings, some from Korea, Japan , China, etc. Our karate school is based on one of the Korean teachings. We have colored belts that other surrounding schools do not have and vice versa. The rankings and colors of the belts as you progress are just stepping stools until you reach the black belt. Once you get black belt, then you really begin to learn karate.

  • In Ashihara Karate, a type of Kyokushin, we had white, blue, yellow, green, brown, brown kyu and shodan black (exactly in the ascending order).
