I have a Macintosh problem running OS Classic Environment...?

I am trying to get an older powerbook I have to work just for an extra computer, and I am trying to install something.

When it opens the OS 9.2 Classic Environment, it loads for a moment, and then closes on its own.

The program wont install without installing it thru the classic OS.

Please, if you are a Mac expert, let me know what my options are, or what I can do.

Thanks!

I'm running an Apple PowerBoox G4, with OS X 10.1.5.

  • I have had this happen with a G4 powerbook before. The software for system 9.2 has to be reinstalled. The two systems have separate install disks. You can install system 9.2 and it should work and not disturb OS 10. If you have printer software that has to work with a system 9.2 program then you will have to reinstall it.

You can also start in OS X with the system disk and then go into system preferences - System - Classic and turn off classic at startup. If the program you are trying to start is something that requires system 9 then it will try to start sys 9 even if it has been turned off in Preferences.

As quick as you can try to connect to the internet and update your system software. In sys 10 look under the apple menu (upper left) for Software update. Sometime updating the system software will also help this problem.

There may be someother things that might help you, but without the computer in front of me or knowing exacting what you were trying to do when it starts up reinstalling the software and then updating is the best ideas I have.

Good luck - I feel your pain....I've been there before

  • Try booting up without extensions. This can be done by holding Shift on boot-up. If it successfully loads, then it is an extension problem that resulted in the freeze. Go to the Extension Manager and disable any third party Extensions then try booting up again and seeing if the problem persists.

If you have the installation CD you can also put that in the drive Hold "C" on start-up, (C is for booting from CDs) and it should boot from the CD. You can then do the Extension fix. Or Reinstall the operating system if necessary. 8.5+ has an option to do a clean install which will use a new System folder instead of an old one.

This should leave all your data intact but try backing it up if possible to avoid any problems.

    Good Luck.

IF you must you can emulate the old system on your recent computer by using Sheepshaver. However it takes a bit of work.

  • Forget it. Mac is up to 10.4.6. and most if not all programs run on 10.4.6. Whatever your running, it's in conflict with your current operating system. If your computer still doesn't run (G3 laptop or low-end G4), you may have to upgrade your hardware.

You can either upgrade part of the hardware or just make a wise investment and get a new laptop. This will save you time and money. If and when you get a new system, be smart enough to stay on top of the latest software updates so you won't have problems again.

And don't listen to NEO. Windows and MAC are like Apples and Oranges. You stay with what taste best for you.

  • Macintosh OS is unlike minded with Lenovo Y650. The IdeaPad Y650 is a multimedia pc from Lenovo with a fine looking sixteen-inch reveal screen, HDMI out, a extensive touchpad with multi-touch controls, and adequate capacity and storage to function your primary family contributors laptop
