  • Chuckles, in Texas you only need a cert from 600 hours of training to be a Paramedic.

In the UK it is the equivalent of a 4 year college degree. One also does not have to be a firefighter and the Paramedic is considered a real profession all by itself and not just an add on cert.

  • You do not need a degree to become a fire fighter, EMT or paramedic. Most community colleges offer certification programs for EMTs & firefighters, & typically associates degrees in fire science. You do not need more than a community college education to become involved in these careers.

For example one person I corresponded with talked to a recruiter for the Houston Fire Department & was told the best option was to do the program at the Junior college because you have to have at least 60 hours of college credit to become a Fire Fighter for the Houston Fire Department.

You will get your best answer for your area by dropping in at your local fire station & just ask the fire fighters what they had to do to qualify, besides being in fantastic physical shape.

The same applies to becoming a Paramedic or EMT, though it should be stated that while firefighters must be in peak physical condition, EMTs & Paramedics typically must pass a lift test for employment, usually the lift test is a minimum of 100lbs.
